Ordinarily I would have typed something about TammyJo’s mother for yesterday’s post, but that wasn’t what was popping up in my head so instead I wrote the earlier entry and to quote a friend, it is what it is. I hope you can take something from it, whether it be an appreciation for having your mom, having a best friend or something totally different.
We laugh and joke sometimes in the RP community about our characters being the “me” we wished we were. Maybe that isn’t totally the case but sometimes we get to work through our feelings and issues or write our story the way we wished it was instead of the way it actually happened, then again sometimes we just fly by the seat of our pants and jump without a net. The later is scary, so I am working on building those nets and boundaries so that I know my current characters better, so hopefully my future ones will grow as well.
TammyJo’s mother was diagnosed with cancer and later died when she was 15. As her mother’s illness progressed, TJ started taking over caring for her and her dad. Lila is the name I’ve given her mother, partly for Lila Quartermaine from General Hospital and because it is a shortened form of a family name.
Lila is damn near everything a girl could want in a mother yet she isn’t a ‘MaryJane’ character. While I’d love to tell you she was fashioned after my own mom, she wasn’t. Instead she is a hodgepodge of different strong women in my life. Mom, Martha, my grandma, among others.
She is strong and resilient, more of a willow tree than an oak because she bent in stormy weather but her home is often wet with tears of the sorrow of her life. The fact that she knew she was dying young and leaving her family behind caused her to become fiercely overprotective and ruthless. While her husband wore the pants in the family she was the backbone of the power couple supporting, encouraging and if need be kicking TX in the ass to motivate him.
The thing she wanted most in the world was for her daughter to have the love that she had and to make him as successful accordingly as she could.
Lila is still present in TammyJo’s life both through memories, flashbacks and dreams. TJ favors her mother physically right down to the natural curl to their hair.
Tammy is so connected to her mother that she carries her last name. One of her most prized possessions is a claddagh ring passed from mother to daughter since it was worn as a wedding ring by TammyJo’s great grandmother. The ring is currently worn by Roman on his pinky.
